The Party Needs a Publishing Arm: Introducing the Communist Manifesto by 1917 Books

1917 Books is the publishing arm of the Communist Workers’ Platform USA. We draw our name from the year in which the workers of tsarist Russia won the greatest victory in the history of the working class movement: the October Revolution. Our organization aims for nothing less than the construction of a revolutionary vanguard party organized along the lines of the victorious Bolshevik party, guided in action by Marxism-Leninism.

The Communist Party, as the practical and ideological vanguard of the working class, must take concrete steps to ensure its leading position. It must take up the fundamental task of organizing materials for education. Central to this effort is the publication of ideological works both classic and modern. Publishing is a crucial task for communists and must not be treated as secondary or driven by financial gain. Like the Party's newspaper, publishing is a fundamental aspect of the Party's existence. Without it, cadres, candidates, and supporters would be left to rely on various publishers motivated by profit or those run by opportunists who distort and revise the revolutionary works of Marxist-Leninsm.

The canon of revolutionary work stretching from Marx and Engels to the present day is filled with lessons and concepts that serve as the foundations of our work. Without these collected works, our collective ability to mount the fight for socialism, to launch the revolution, would be dead on arrival. Our movement today must learn from the experiences and work of the many hundreds and thousands of revolutionaries who have devoted their lives to adding their contributions to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism.

With 1917 Books, our aim as the Communist Workers’ Platform USA is to further consolidate the ideological work and take our next step in our struggle the earn the vanguard position in the socialist revolution here in the USA.

1917 Books begins with the republication of the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels; a groundbreaking political document that has profoundly influenced the revolutionary working-class movement since its publication in 1848. Advocating for the overthrow of bourgeois supremacy and the establishment of a classless, communist society the Manifesto aids the communists to distinguish themselves from many other "socialist" trends, both then and now, by recognizing the abolition of class society "can be effected only by a revolution," that is, by a socialist revolution.

In the spirit of its enduring legacy, we at 1917 Books are republishing the Manifesto as part of our ongoing effort to reconstitute the Communist Party in the United States of America. By making this seminal work accessible to a new generation, we aim to revive the revolutionary spirit and principles that can guide the struggle for socialism-communism.
