A Dangerous Escalation in the Russia-Ukraine War

On Monday, 18 November, President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine’s use of Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) weapons provided by the United States. These long range missiles allow Ukraine to strike military targets deeper in Russian territory. The Institute for the Study of War has found that hundreds of Russian targets are within range of ATACMS missiles.

Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated in response to the development: “it's obvious that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to continue fueling the fire and provoke a further escalation of tensions." The Russian foreign ministry stated further, "Kiev's use of long-range missiles to attack our territory would represent the direct involvement of the United States and its satellites in hostilities against Russia," promising vowing an "appropriate and palpable" response.

This is a perilous escalation in the conflict, further increasing the risk of a broader and more destructive conflict amongst these competing imperialist powers. With the deployment of 12,000 North Korean troops to the Kursk region, the heightened stakes of the war present a danger to the workers of all states involved in the conflict as they will pay the cost of the conflict with their lives.

The Communist Workers’ Platform USA urges the necessity of raising the call against the imperialist war and continues the struggle against the ruling class in the USA. The capitalists continue arming Ukraine to the tune of billions while the economic and social needs of the workers and people of our country go unmet.
