The Escalation of the Conflict in the Middle East
The next phase of the US, Israeli, and their Euro-Atlantic allies' plans in the Middle East is fully underway, marked by deadly assaults aimed at clearing Gaza of the Palestinian people. Since March 2, even amid a so-called "truce," all humanitarian aid to Gaza has been blocked. On March 18, Israel once again violated the ceasefire with waves of airstrikes, killing more than 600 people, including 200 children. Coupled with its advances in previous weeks in the West Bank, Israel has made its intentions clear: to seize, occupy, and annex Palestinian territories.
The repeated and tragic breaches of ceasefires only reaffirm that agreements brokered by imperialist forces cannot ensure peace or security for the region’s people; rather, they pave the way for further escalations of conflict.
The destruction of any prospect for an independent Palestinian state, under the guise of “self-defense,” is a key objective of Israel, carried out with the full and shameless complicity of its allies, who either conceal the massacre with lies or openly declare their intentions. Among those who openly state their goals in the region is the US, which, under both the Biden and Trump administrations, maintains Israel as an enforcer of its imperialist interests in the Middle East. A key example is the advancement of interests through the U.S.-Israel Strategic Consultative Group.
Israel’s actions reflect its expansionist and genocidal policy against the Palestinian people, with the intolerable conditions faced daily by those in Gaza and the West Bank being fully tolerated by its allies. Through its murderous policies, the Israeli bourgeoisie is seeking to upgrade its role and establish Israel as a major power in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean - mercilessly seizing control of the valuable coast of the Gaza Strip.
Despite campaigning on a so-called “platform of peace” and pledging to “end the wars,” Trump has openly signaled the US ruling class's criminal intent to remove the Palestinian population while further advancing US interests in the region by setting its sights on Iran. In this context, the US has begun bombing Yemen, killing 53 people, and setting sanctions on Tehran, making clear that this deadly assault is intended to draw in Iran, the main enemy in the region.
This series of deadly military campaigns by the US and Israel represents the escalation of a new phase in a conflict that began with the war on Gaza in 2023, intensified with the bombings of Lebanon in 2024, and advanced further with the overthrow of the Syrian government to install jihadist forces with Turkey’s backing. At its core, these developments are driven by the US's pursuit of dominance within the imperialist system as it struggles to counter its growing displacement by China. Moreover, they reflect the broader confrontation between the US-EU bloc and China-Russia, a rivalry that has fueled the imperialist war in Ukraine, ignited tensions over Taiwan, and sparked conflicts across multiple regions.
The people of the Middle East remain trapped in violent struggles over spheres of influence, markets, energy and mineral wealth, and control of strategic transport routes. US imperialism, with Israel as its spearhead, has plunged the region into chaos, deepening contradictions between regional and global powers vying for the profits and interests of major business groups.
The international situation is intensifying, revealing that the only force capable of resisting the rise of reactionary, protectionist, and warmongering trends worldwide is the working class. Our solidarity with the Palestinian people must be inseparable from the struggle against the capitalist governments of our own countries, whose interests are directly tied to the devastation in the Middle East. These are the interests of monopolies that not only exploit us at home but also orchestrate pogroms against the peoples abroad.
The Communist Workers’ Platform continues to emphasize that the working class and the people of our country can channel their outrage and confront this situation in an organized manner through the reorganization of the Communist Party. The issue of ending US involvement in wars is a matter of growing interest among the people of the US. It is necessary to intensify the struggle against the role of the US, demand the removal of all US military bases, and push for disengagement from imperialist alliances and agreements; a fight that must be directly linked to the overthrow of the exploitative system that sustains the barbarity in Palestine and the wider Middle East.
Our task is to strike at the root and put an end to the source of primary economic and military support of the terroristic Israeli regime. Within the ranks of the Communist Party, standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people, we can dismantle the criminal system of imperialist bloodshed orchestrated by all US governments.
