Delivery

The smog at the depot choked us

under a red moon

And when the sun rose it turned the clouds

to orange and purple hues

I delivered groceries before the sky turned blue

I entered the hills and holler

The infant crops lime green

the grass goldenrod

And the fog scattered the light of the morning sun

From small shack to townhome tall

I delivered groceries door to door

before they woke in the early morn

But not a soul in sight on any porch

No one to hand these groceries to

Everyone sleeping soundly

Or at their jobs before noon

And crept this loneliness I felt

And I wondered if the people in these houses

felt it too

How all the groceries I deliver

Makes another man richer

And keeps me from meeting all of you

One day our time will come

When we finally get to meet

We’ll chase the bosses from the table

Where the fruits of your labor they swallow

Where they have their meals and feasts

Is ours in common, forever to keep

Yes by day your groceries will be at your door

Then by night, under our night sky, we’ll meet
