SEIU 32BJ Staff Go Public With Their Union
Today, the staff of SEIU 32BJ, one of the largest property service locals in the country, announced that they are organizing an in-house staff union. 32BJ staff are seeking affiliation under the NewsGuild-CWA, which successfully won legal recognition a month ago for the staff of SEIU 1199. Staff for SEIU 1199 won recognition for their union in July despite a vicious anti-union campaign from the yellow union leadership.
This wave of unionization of SEIU staff comes at a time of sharpening antagonisms between the union’s rank-and-file and non-supervisory staff and the union bureaucrats. While union staff has historically clashed over low pay, overwork, and no say in the choice of assignments, the current movement of staff has galvanized over the question of Palestine.
SEIU leadership endorsed the Biden, now Kamala, campaign despite the aid the administration has sent to the genocidal state of Israel which is actively slaughtering our Palestinian brothers and sisters. The yellow leadership can no longer conceal the contradiction between the union’s stated support of all working and oppressed people across the world and its active complicity in the ongoing genocide, and the rank-and file see that clearly.
