On March 27th, Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a call for Katelyn Hall, who was experiencing a mental health crisis. After tearing the door open, Katelyn charged the officers with a sharp object, and LMPD shot her. Since the release of bodycam footage, LMPD’s rapid escalation of the situation has been exposed. A police force notorious for its murder of working-class black women met someone suffering with breaking in and murdering them in cold blood. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Katelyn Hall.

It’s important to emphasize LMPD‘s inadequacy for the situation. What resources that could’ve helped her were not made available because she posed a risk to herself, a baffling contradiction. We condemn the bureaucratic network for getting people mental health care that shuts so many of those who need it out. But most of all, it would be a mistake not to identify the root of the cause as the capitalist system that crushes the masses under the weight of exploitation, and meets their suffering with more violence.

There is no amount of reform, or training, that will erase the foundational fact of exploitation. Profits for capital at the risk of murder or incarceration, in many cases both. A system that makes people sick psychologically and profits off of their condition isn‘t a crisis in management but a social sickness in itself. The LMPD must be abolished and can only be when capitalism is abolished, and the entire state machinery is smashed. The sickness that permeates through the working class must be met with healthcare available to everyone who needs it. The racism that endangers the lives of black workers is born of exploitation, historic and present, and must be rooted out by a new state in the hands of all workers. The value we as workers create must be freed from the coffers of the capitalist and put in control of the working class! Revolution must be organized!
